COMPETITION

Owing to industrialization, Subotica has developed and grown into a modern mid-European city in the period from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Wealthy citizens at that time-landowners, industrialists, craftsmen and merchants build modern buildings following examples from Budapest and Vienna. In the following period, architecture typical for other European cities such as Munich, Paris and London also made its way through in Subotica. Today, buildings in Secession, Neo-renaissance, Neo-gothic, Neo-baroque Neo-classicism and Modern style are dominant in the protected city core.

The construction of the building that is subject of this Competition shall be realized in the protected city core, in Petefi Šandor street 3 and 5, between the Gymnasium – built in 1895 in baroque style according to projects by the famous Raichle Ferenc which represents an immovable cultural heritage of the city on one side and the Policlinic-also a protected building, one of the most beautiful buildings from the period between two World wars, on the other side.

From the urban aspect, care must be taken about the fact that the building must fit into the boundary and frontage line of the street. The purpose of the building is a residential-commercial building, as most buildings in the city center. The building is located on a very significant location in the city center. The small square in front allows it to be seen from all directions which is yet another important benchmarks when designing.

While creating the architectural design of the facade, it is important to take into consideration the cultural and architectural heritage of the protected city center of Subotica. The facade, however, must not be a copy, pastiche of any of the historic styles but contemporary, authentic, adequate and complex architectural response to the narrow and wider context of the future building. Use contemporary, quality and certified materials. Regardless of the atmospheric conditions, construction elements and materials must maintain an unchanged appearance of the building.

The Competition is open from February 15, 2016 and lasts 60 days. Registration by e-mail is obligatory. It should consist of Name/names of participants and address. Registrations as well as all possible inquiries are to be sent to the following e-mail address: dgcompetition2016@gmail.com. The deadline for registration is April1, 2016. Participants may send in questions regarding this Competition by April2, 2016 at the latest. Replies from the Jury and Investor to all questions are will be sent by e-mail within 3 days from receiving the question.

The deadline for submission of works is April 15, 2016. The deadline for the Jury to evaluate all works is 30 days after closing the Competition. The results of the Competition and all awarded works will be published on the Organizer’s web site within 15 days after the Jury’s decision. Along with the results, information about the exhibition of works will also be provided (time and place). All works shall be presented at the exhibition with or without the full names of the authors, all depending on their preferences.
